Design For Print Workshop Three - In Design.

  • Setting up
    • open new document, set page size, columns, margins, guides, bleed etc.
    • speak to the printer about stocks, bleeds, file format and colour libraries before you start.
    • standard bleed is 3mm, but this could change.
    • slug area is used for registration/printers marks.
    • use facing pages for book format.

  • Master Pages
    • applying something to a master page will apply it to every page.
    • to delete a master item from a certain page (e.g front cover) press cmd+shift to unlock it and then delete.
    • you can also create multiple master pages, menu - new master, then drag the new master onto the selected page. This can be useful for chapter pages etc.

  • Colour Application
    • colour has to be applied to a frame, either fill or stroke.
    • frames are like vector shapes in Illustrator so the pen tool could be used
    • colour can be applied using fill, colour picker, swatches etc.
    • swatch selection is small so you will have to create your own.
    • swatches are automatically CMYK.
    • to change the colour of text click the 'T' and it will do it.
    • create a new swatch using the CMYK bars or select a spot colour.
    • to create a new tint swatch select it on the menu and then adjust the percentage.

  • Preparation for InDesign Photoshop
    • exact size of document
    • appropriate resolution, 300dpi
    • CMYK or greyscale
    • PSD or TIFF file. PSD for transparency
  • Preparation for InDesign Illustrator
    • CMYK
    • AI file, can also copy and paste straight from Illustrator
    • Doesn't need to be exact size, can be scales up or down
  • Placing Images
    • file > place > image
    • when adding an image that contains spot colours they are automatically added to the swatch library.
    • when placing images on InDesign keep all your images in the same place and don't move them as it will disrupt the links.
    • when copy and pasting from Illustrator the image is high quality and you don't have to worry about links. The spot colours are also added.
    • When importing a greyscale tiff image you can change it into a monotone. Click content grabber (two circles) then select a swatch from the library. The background can also be edited.
    • to edit the image select it, right click then click on 'edit original'
    • if it opens in preview go to the file press cmd+I and change the open with to Photoshop, then click change all.

    • to make a background transparent open in Photoshop, make the layer unlocked and use the magic wand tool to remove the background. Save as a PSD file.

  • Sending InDesign to print
    • open up separations preview, represents all the inks that are going to be used.
    • selecting 'separations' in this window will show the highest quality preview.
    • you can also hide certain colours, selecting only one will leave a greyscale image that would represent the printing plate that would be used to print it.
    • delete unused swatches from the palette as it will cost more money.
    • when being sent to print select 'separations' on the output menu.
    • halftones can also be viewed here - frequency and angle.
    • the angles are: cyan 15, magenta 75, yellow 0 and black 45. Called a rosette pattern, this is done so the dots don't overlay each other.

  • Overprinting and Knocking Out
    • the separations preview can also give information on over printing and knocking out.
    • it allows you to change the default settings.
    • spot colours can be used to apply things like varnish rather than the colour.
    • use the attributes panel and select 'overprint fill'. Useful for the varnish process and also screen printing.
