What Is A Line? Final Photos.

These are the images for my What Is A Line? project. I am really pleased with it and I think it is one of my favourite things that I have created on the course so far. I was worried about if the double sided printing would be accurate and also that my pages would fold up correctly. Thankfully this all went well, otherwise I would have been disappointed. It is nice to be able to flick through the pages rather than jut viewing it on the screen, from doing this I think the transition through the pages is successful and I think I have chosen the correct patterns to be paired with each other. My favourite spread is the zebra and tiger as I think it has the most impact due to condensed imagery and bold colour, some further experiments I could have done would be to develop the other patterns more to this style.

3D Typography.

Here are some documentary photo's taken of our group me, Steph, Andy and Chris. We had the task of creating some three dimensional type using 3 plains. This means that the letter is only visible when you are looking straight on through the view finder, where as from other angles it looks like a group of floating boxes. We chose to make the letter 'k'. Our first piece that was the vertical block was the easiest but from there it got harder as it was difficult to get the correct angles whilst still keeping it in line with pieces that were already in place. The size of blocks and perspective also had to be considered. Our final piece that was the smallest gave us the most trouble as we had to create a line for it to hang from. I think we worked well as a team and created our installation well together and came over any difficulties we faced quickly.

A gif made by Andy that documents our progress through the task.

What Is A Line? Hot Dog Book Creation.

I have now started piecing my hot dog book together. I started by drawing out a grid so that I could get positioning correct. I created my pages on photoshop as I found it easier to get the clean edges I needed. I then arranged them into the layout, I was relieved when they all fitted correctly into their space.

Here are my pages in their final positions, I played around with where they were in order to balance the colours so there was a contrast on each. I also changed the bird pattern slightly as I felt that there was too much white space that didn't fit with the other pages.

Next I moved to my cover design. I started by choosing a typeface and layering the main aspects of my patterns over each other into the composition. Although I liked how they were all included I wasn't happy with how the shapes were protruding into the centre.

This is why I chose to make a clean border. I made a thinner one inside to create a graduation so that it wasn't so severe.

I felt the colours as a whole for the cover were to bold so I experimented with the opacity on both the inside and inside to give a more subtle appearance. I then completed my type I like the white space that surrounds it as it focuses the composition and exaggerates the clean and simple style.

This is my final developed cover where I have lowered the opacity of the white box in the centre. Even though I wrote previously that I didn't like the images going past the border, but I think here with them so light I like the effect the effect it gives as it isn't very overpowering. I have also kept the more simple version to use as the back cover.

This is one completed side of the book, I am happy with how it has all fit together and I hope that when it's printed it will all fold correctly.

I then started on the poster that would go on the opposite side of the book. I wanted to include all the main aspects of the imagery from the pages. I started off with the circular shape lemur tail as I thought it would be a good base and from there I flowed outwards trying to use the colours so that it gave a smooth transition too. Getting the shapes in the right position and angle was harder than I expected. I then experimented with adding type to the composition as I wanted the audience to be able to read an explanation of the piece. Although I found that I didn't like how it compromised the look of the pattern, so I decided to keep it as the original and find somewhere else for the writing to go.

I have decided to change to back cover of the book so that it can accommodate the type. I feel this is a good decision as it fills the space well and allows the poster to remain image based.

What Is A Line? Pattern Development.

I have decided to experiment with adding some colour to my patterns to lift it from black and white. I started off with quite bold, bright tones and then changed it slightly to more greys and pastels as I felt it looked more aesthetically attractive. I played around with the lightness of each to ensure I got the right balance. For my final design I added an additional level of colour which finishes it off well.

I then moved on to the tiger design where I started off using an alternative colour to what usually would be associated, although after looking at it I decided to stick with the common link that is orange. With this pattern I also played around with stroke thickness in order to have the right amount of each tone showing from behind the main line.

I then continued the process with my other designs keeping as well as I could with colours they would be associated with to carry on the theme. I also kept the tones in pastel shades so that when I incorporate all the imagery into the book there will be continuity across the pages which will make a fluid viewing for the audience.
